BeLonging

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 13, 2015

“We all need to belong, is that the wrong assumption?
Will we always be longing for something?”
–MC FÜBB

Toronto Hip Hop Artist MC FÜBB Releases New Project after Two-Year Hiatus

(Toronto, ON) – After a two-year hiatus since his last official release (the critically acclaimed EP, the poet), Toronto hip hop artist MC FÜBB has teamed up with producer/emcee Noyz to release their new collaborative EP: BeLonging. Thematically centered around the fundamental human need to belong, MC FÜBB weaves together notions of authenticity, creativity, peace, and finding one’s place in the world as he raps over a rich instrumental tapestry created by beat-smith Noyz. Featuring soulful vocals by Mike Devine on “Belong” and the buzz single “Grace,” the end result is a cohesive, five-track musical project that aims to strike emotional chords with listeners through thought-provoking lyrics, inspiring melodies, and songs with high replay value.

Here’s what Noyz has to say about the theme of new EP:

“The title ‘BeLonging’ and the artwork is a reflection of struggles that we all face. We don’t want to feel left out; we want a place that feels like home, where we know we belong. However, within this longing, we often miss out on the truth that we already do belong. We are all created from the same materials and the same source, and as beings in this universe, the feeling of belonging is something that should be natural and innate within all of us. Finding and strengthening that connection is a lifelong journey.”

BeLonging isn’t the first time that FÜBB and Noyz have worked together: in 2011, the two artists released In the Face of No Agreement (aka ITFONA), a full length album exploring the theme of using hip hop as an empowering vehicle for overcoming one’s internal obstacles. Noyz also produced “Poetically Correct” on MC FÜBB’s EP the poet, and FÜBB featured on the song “Keep Moving On” on Noyz’s album Degrees of Freedom.

A release party for the new EP will be held on Thursday, February 5 at Studio Bar (824 Dundas Street West, Toronto), featuring performances by MC FÜBB, Noyz, reggae/funk band The Responsables, music by DJ Xplisit, and special guest appearances.

Pen and Pad

“…if we pay close enough attention to the signs, then they do appear/
and guide us towards the rivers of life – it’s all fluid there/
if there’s a destiny to fulfill, we must do it there/
put my pen to pad, receive courage and march through the fear…”

More than just a book of rhymes, Toronto hip hop artist MC FÜBB views his notebook as a place to capture his authentic self – a vessel for his soul’s expression. In “Pen and Pad,” a spoken word/acapella rap piece + video, FÜBB explores the role that writing poetry and lyrics plays as he works to contextualize his life, making sense of past hardships, acknowledging his present circumstances, and working towards his vision for the future. More than just a reflection on his own life, “Pen and Pad” is a piece that encourages listeners to think about their own purpose in the world, as MC FÜBB says:

“It’s about more than just me and what I’m dealing with – it’s about where we’re heading collectively as human beings. I don’t think I’m unique in asking the questions I’m asking about purpose or how to be at home in the world; all of us deal with these existential yearnings at some level. My role as an emcee, and even more primarily as a poet, is to express these feelings in ways that perhaps most people don’t yet have access to. To write unwritten truths and speak unspoken knowledge – that’s my job as a poet and an emcee.”

The video for "Pen and Pad" is the second spoken word/acapella rap video that MC FÜBB has released in anticipation of his upcoming EP, the poet, which will drop in late 2012.

Another Rapper Video

Tired of being looked over, shrugged off, and brushed to the side by the music industry, media sources, and even his own peers, MC FÜBB felt it necessary to vent his frustrations on his last album, In the Face of No Agreement (aka ITFONA). In anticipation of his upcoming EP, the poet, FÜBB teamed up with Evan Ciniello (StreetCar Creative) to release a video for his spoken word/acapella rap piece "Another Rapper" (which appears on ITFONA).

"I wrote 'Another Rapper' as part of a process in which I was getting out a lot of my internal struggles and frustrations, which was sort of the personal theme of ITFONA for me," says FÜBB. "I wanted to explicitly show and prove to people why I'm not just another rapper out of the millions of rappers in the world. People might wonder, 'why should I pay attention to you? What makes you special or different than everyone else?' 'Another Rapper' is my answer to those questions."

The video for "Another Rapper" is the first in a series of spoken word/acapella rap videos that MC FÜBB will be releasing before the poet EP drops in late 2012.

"Another Rapper" is featured as track #7 on MC FÜBB's album, "In the Face of No Agreement," produced exclusively by Noyz (http://mcfubb.bandcamp.com/album/in-the-face-of-no-agreement-lp).

The Path

Lyrics for "The Path” feat. Mike Devine (produced by Junia T) - lead single on the poet EP:

VERSE 1:

I saw my life painted on a canvas
strayed from my path and then the picture vanished
did a bit of damage
tried to put it down, but life without raps – I can’t manage
now I’m feeling famished
hungry for a bigger life, thirsty for a broader dream
now at least I sleep nights not toking like a fiend
and though I’m grateful for that, I can’t stop moving
when I’m making progress the only time I’m not losing
six years since I stopped boozing – for what?
so I could relax and lay in the cut? nah – fuck that
can’t live my life without momentum like a drum track
keep my skills sharp like the tip of a thumbtack
I know that there’s battles ahead, I won’t run from
though I feel cut from my Roots – my life “Undun”
but from this place, spitting out distaste
refuse to live my life in the shadow of disgrace
the race of a thousand souls, what is fifth place?
when only one or two can shine, what is it we chase?
life ain’t an iPhone, you can’t replace
years gone by or the time you waste
staring in the mirror, tryna analyze my face
the man that grew from a boy,
now it’s build or destroy
I guess it’s time to put away old toys
on this journey tryna find my voice

CHORUS:
seeing my dreams as I create that
ain’t no rehearsal and ain’t no take backs
blessed with a gift and I’ve got to show it
ain’t no glory on the path of a poet
I know that time don’t wait for no man
gotta stay focused on where I’m goin’
where this road leads is not for knowin’
try to keep faith and enjoy the moment

VERSE 2:

consumed by thoughts that aren’t theirs
pursuing wares that ain’t fit for the wear
walking through life sometimes I stop and stare
I’m looking for that soul but it just ain’t there
try to numb out but I really do care
what’s the point of keeping score when nothing is fair?
sometimes I wish that I wasn’t so aware
but I know what I know, I gotta spit it and the message is rare
we are much more than they ever said we were, unsure
of whether we can live out our dreams, cliché as it seems
I believe that we need to achieve
our utmost, to bear fruits on these branches of leaves
(so) caught up in all that we receive
we refuse to pay attention to the things that the world really needs
we hiding in the night like thieves
looking for ways to get a buzz but we’re never relieved
we can’t relax, losing real estate in our minds – Remax
try to do better but we tend to relapse
where are we goin? we gotta take a look where we at
we can’t grow from where we ain’t, we’re not sinners or saints
we’re in between like the colour between purple and green
it’s all blue, the distance between me and you
real recognize real, real recognize the fake too
but I don’t hate you…

CHORUS:
seeing my dreams as I create that
ain’t no rehearsal and ain’t no take backs
blessed with a gift and I’ve got to show it
ain’t no glory on the path of a poet
I know that time don’t wait for no man
gotta stay focused on where I’m goin’
where this road leads is not for knowin’
try to keep faith and enjoy the moment

VERSE 3:

moments yeah they pass by
sometimes miss ‘em like I got two glass eyes
everybody hustle hard, tryna live ‘em fast lives
half the time talking in tongues, speaking fast lies
overly familiar like past-lives
feeling like I been here before, is this a failed attempt
to live a glorious life, or am I just exempt
from the mediocrity of averages
that we all condone while ignoring the savageness
honestly, I don’t how to handle this
sometimes lost in my ramblings, searching for advantages
tryna manage my own career without management
half my time spent tryna recoup my damages
so what’s the sense in it
when everything’s an expense and that I keep on investing in
self-interest vested in
laying out my soul over beats and manifesting it
struggling’s the method that my character is tested in
not just another rap specimen
a poet that grew from walking the path of lesser men
from the fog I was in to way out of my element
I still resist this road to my detriment
I got a soul sickness – this art is my medicine
so I’ma play my part and shine light like Edison
but I’ve learned to keep my pace steady-and
anything less than my God given purpose I’m not settling

CHORUS:
seeing my dreams as I create that
ain’t no rehearsal and ain’t no take backs
blessed with a gift and I’ve got to show it
ain’t no glory on the path of a poet
I know that time don’t wait for no man
gotta stay focused on where I’m goin’
where this road leads is not for knowin’
try to keep faith and enjoy the moment

Noyz - Keep Movin' On feat. MC FÜBB

FLUFF

"I bring it raw - these kats is FLUFF." -MC FÜBB

With so much "cotton-ball rap" released on the daily, MC FÜBB thought it only appropriate to express his views on the subject through a hip hop song. In contradiction to what he perceives as the predominantly cotton candy, bubble gum, fluff music lacking substance of today, FÜBB drops a filet mignon of juicy rhymes and flows (or tofu, if you prefer), over a scrumptious beat by producer MMAC. Is your mouth watering? Good.

"Fluff" is the first single off FÜBB's upcoming EP, "the poet," which features production from MMAC, Noyz, Junia T, Justunlimited, NTG, and Fresh Kils.

Produced by MMAC.
Recorded and mixed by Fresh Kils @ The Kilzone.

Uphill

My whole life's been an uphill climb.
Nothing's ever come easy,
and if it did, it was fleeting
memories dissolving like
icing sugar on the tongue,
sweet for a moment then done.

I'm still climbing.

Never felt like I fit in,
now I know it's because I don't
fit into the plan of those who made it,
still striving to walk the path - I feel God's lament
over my detoured ways,
growing impatient
thinking that I need a relocation,
bouncing between bars.

In between bars I spit my truth;
when I write, all I am is light
fighting my way through cobwebs I've let accumulate.
Perhaps there's no direct path to fate.

But if who I am and everything I create is not enough
to "make it"
then I might as well be dead now,
but I'm not.
I must have more left to do and say,
more left to do and say
on this uphill climb.

Substance

The first thing I'm recording in 2012 is a verse that I'm dropping on a collaborative project that two fellow Toronto hip hop artists are working on - Fenaxiz and royceBIRTH. These are the lyrics:

It really shouldn’t be surprising
with everybody scared to look inside they focused on what they buying
accepting implicit values instead of searching and defining
when you perpetuate the status quo, what are you defying?
let me break it down
hip hop’s something real, you can embrace it
it’s gotta have some substance to it so that you can taste it
content’s consumerism so I’m taking issue
cuz when you’re laying six feet deep, you can’t take it with you
every time I spit I feel I’m firing off a missile
homing on your heart and I’m praying that it hits you
so you can get awakened to something that is bigger
than this brainwashed life, got my finger on the trigger
targeting all types, all peoples of all colours
my message is this: I want ya’ll to stop killing each other
can’t keep it real with yourself, how you gonna keep it real with your brother
feeling lost so I turned to my mother
she said son, let ‘em be, accept ‘em for what they are
save your power for the battles ahead – you’re going far
try to let go of the past, though it’s on me like a scar
just ‘cause you got some shine don’t make you a star
now I ain’t tryna be the type to rain on your parade
but just cuz you getting plays that don’t mean you’ve got it made
from where I’m sitting, your whole stees need adjustments
what’s the point of music if it ain’t got substance?

Quality Control is in full effect
Wack emcees watch out - Crossword, L the 12th Letter and MC FÜBB are on patrol.

TORONTO - In a world full of fakers and wannabes, wack rappers run amok. Luckily, Toronto emcees Crossword, L the 12th Letter and MC FÜBB are on the case, applying Quality Control to offenders of the culture and perpetrators of wackness. In the video for "Quality Control," directed by Jason Matos, the trio roam the T-dot streets in search of the real. They encounter a number of spitters that simply don't make the cut, and combat them with insightful lyrics, provocative flows and passionate deliveries. Wack emcees will be graded, written up, stamped down and aired out, not to mention have their girls taken from them. The moral of the story? Don't be a lame. Crossword, L the 12th Letter and MC FÜBB will call you out on it all day.

Wack Stamp not included.

Press Release: Toronto 2 Chicago (#TO2CHI)

Two days, two nights, two banging tracks. This past summer, Crossword and MC FÜBB (The Cypher, H3/Hip Hop Headz) took a road trip from Toronto to Chicago. While the main focus of the trip was to bring Toronto-based event The Cypher down to the windy city, the two emcees also linked up with studio engineer John Randle at JDR Sounds. The first recording session went so well
that FÜBB and Cross came back the next day to lay out another track. The end result: the Toronto artists banged out two joints with Chicago artists they'd never met prior.

The products of their collaborations are unleashed in Toronto 2 Chicago (aka #TO2CHI), a hard-hitting double single release that bridges the distance between artists in the two great cities in the name of creating high quality hip hop music. The two track release features Chicago emcee Cada Bug and Toronto's DJ Nef-You on "Casey Anthony," a high-octane track with a murderous beat produced by TO's Justunlimited. Producer/emcee Shake LaBomba rapped on and provided beat for "Not Impressed,” on which all three artists spit diverse flows over a 6/8 timing instrumental (an atypical meter for hip hop music).

In a musical era where monotony and lacklustre quality are commonplace, Toronto 2 Chicago raises the bar by infusing a fresh dose of creative production, original lyricism, distinctive flows and raw hip hop flavour for astute listeners worldwide.

Artist Information:

Crossword: Emcee, band member, journalist, promoter and connector are all titles by which Crossword is known. A lyricist serious with his craft since the age of 13, the Iranian-Canadian entered the scene determined to establish his presence. He began by planning concerts at landmark Toronto venues such as Lula Lounge, The Drake Hotel, and the Silver Dollar Room. Having performed alongside Chali 2na and recorded on production by Rich Kidd (Drake, Kardinal Offishall, Andreena Mill), P.So The Earth Tone King (NYC, AOK, 2dopeboyz) and Juno nominee Fresh Kils (D-Sisive, The Extremities), Crossword's career is just taking off. This past September, his band, the Vibonics, released their debut self-titled EP, and he is now working on two solo projects - The Eclectic mixtape, and the Different Light EP.

MC FÜBB: Rapping since the age of 15, MC FÜBB (pronounced "emcee foob") began taking his career as a hip hop MC seriously after graduating from the University of Toronto in the spring of 2009. In Sept. 2009 he dropped his debut EP Foundations which is available for global digital distribution, and followed up with his mixtape Blue Collar Worker in May 2010. He founded a hip hop community called Hip Hop Headz (H3) with which he started the event THE CYPHER, where MCs/rappers come out to showcase their talents and skills. In combination with his fellow H3 members, THE CYPHER has grown to become a staple hip hop event in Toronto, one which FÜBB hosts and freestyles at monthly. His first full length LP In the Face of No Agreement, a collaboration with Brampton producer Noyz, was released in April 2011 under his self-owned label Revolutionary Times Records (RTR). Whether laying down his poetic, intelligent, and intricate verses in the booth or just freestyling in a cypher, MC FÜBB brings a level of intensity and skill to be reckoned with in the world of hip hop.

Album Review: MC FÜBB - In the Face of No Agreement (by Andy Carrington)

"Here be a hungry, intelligent and creatively-gifted man, whose album thrives on the strength of his beat riding, confident vocal tone and range of subject matter, all of which become a warming familiarity early on." -Andy Carrington (andycarrington.co.uk)

Another Rapper

Another rapper.

Just what we need: another rapper.
Another wack-kat who thinks he can rap on tracks,
lacking facts behind his lyrics,
who acts with no tact –
get your mind out that trap.
Get your mouth un-bittered by that taste,
un-chase that rat-race of judgmental space,
T-Dot: unscrew your face!

Another rapper?
Nah, not just another;
not black but I’m still a brother,
your brother,
your son, your father, grandson and gradfather –
don’t waste your time trying to classify me,
don’t bother.
Don’t type-cast me;
white rapper, back-packer, conscious rapper –
don’t gas me,
stand with me for a minute instead of moving right past me.

A rapper?
Not just a rapper – an MC.
Master of Ceremonies,
Microphone Controller,
Move a Crowd like I’m pushing a boulder.
MC:
Masterfully Crafterd,
Magnificently Captured,
Monumental Creations,
Mental Commander,
do you understand the
devotion that I put into my work?
My dedication to making it work?

I doubt it.

I don’t think most take the time to listen,
steady bitchin’ like they’re trapped in a prison
with no vision;
that’s why I’m on a mission.
To tell ya’ll to reach a little higher,
I ain’t tryna preach but teach,
if I can reach even one with what I beseech
then I could peacefully retire
‘cause is my mind the truth is burning like a fire.

No, I’m not just another.
I am not “the other” and neither are you,
no matter what they told you,
let your future unfold you,
let my lyrics hold you,
forget that bullshit they sold you,
your potential is infinite, the future is gold too,
take back your life –
who stole you?
Where did you go away to?
What happened to the God you used to pray to?
That banging beat you used to sway to?
Do not let this world decay you!

We are not just rappers,
DJs and breakers,
graf artists, MCs and beatmakers.
We are hip-hoppas,
nonstoppas,
the one’s hated by parents of 16-year-old daughters,
refusing to be lambs to the slaughter,
not asking for a drink but finding our own water,
wreck-shoppas,
Afrika Bambaataas,
Lil’ Kims and Big Poppas,
the one’s who rock mics proper,
shining like there’s no sun hotter –
the real hip-hoppas.

See I’m not just another rapper; I’m a poet.
It’s in my lyrics on tracks when I flow it
but some act like they don’t know it;
sometimes I even gotta spit it acapella to show it.
Plant a seed, hope to grow it;
I trust in the mic further than I could ever throw it.

I trust in the future being better, I’m wishing
that we open up our eyes to realize what we’re missing,
I trust that I come across as hopeful, not dissing
and I trust that when I speak from the heart
that ya’ll listen.

Breaking the Silence

You’re in a bad situation, why you making it worse?
break your neck with the mic. so you can break in the Hearse
this ain’t what I wanna do, man, it’s what I gotta do if you provoke me
your arm’s too short to choke me
this ain’t a hoax, B
writing down the facts that you won’t see
cuz you think that I’m joking
what the fuck you smoking?
my rhymes leave your pride broken
yo, you better wake up
now here’s a parable:
you try to mess with me and that’s a terrible idea
my rhymes send you straight to hell
I’m MC FÜBB, get to know the name well
I rebel on the mic., I give a fuck if this will sell
most fiending to get played on radio and TV
be infecting the game like an STD
next to me, they’re in a false state of ecstasy
I spit ‘em rhymes that they’re far too perplexed to see

Chorus:
A generation screams for revolution
blood and guns just ain’t the solution
vengeance and violence only brings police sirens
breaking the silence is my contribution
A generation screams for revolution
blood and guns just ain’t the solution
vengeance and violence only brings police sirens
my contribution is breaking the silence

When I’m spitting the writtens, I start foaming like rabies
what I write for the mic could be inspiring babies
to resist, raise a fist to the mass assimilation
mediocrity of minds is destroying the nation
political lies are pitiful, with ridicule
heads follow it and swallow it like brainwash videos
but I ain’t gonna pout – that’s not what I’m about
living in revolutionary times, no doubt
the greatest evil that a good man can do is sit back and do nothing
while hatred goes un-confronted
let me tell you something
better put down the blunt and stop frontin’
cuz this ain’t a joke cousin
this is in your face shit
not some outer-space shit
write my rhymes in ink so that nobody can erase it
spit so much truth in one rhyme, I make your brain sick
like heroin withdrawal, I know your dying to taste it

Chorus:
A generation screams for revolution
blood and guns just ain’t the solution
vengeance and violence only brings police sirens
breaking the silence is my contribution
A generation screams for revolution
blood and guns just ain’t the solution
vengeance and violence only brings police sirens
my contribution is breaking the silence

When I’m wilin’, freestylin’, I start breaking the silence
rhymes freeing and flying out the cell, like Riker’s Island
filing and piling these rhymes, as I start smiling
multiplying rhyming while these people crying and dying
how many people lacking the choices
‘cause they ain’t got voices?
still they dream of owning Rolls Royces
they focused on situations hopeless
the motive for most is to find where the dope is
like players with no coaches, lost in the scramble
trying to manage lives that they just can’t handle
struggling to live, yo – how does that make sense?
trying to make it big when they can’t even pay rent
here is my statement:
everybody’s gotta live for something;
if we don’t create meaning then our lives mean nothing!
subdued long enough, now I write these rhymes to free minds
we live in revolutionary times

Chorus:
A generation screams for revolution
blood and guns just ain’t the solution
vengeance and violence only brings police sirens
breaking the silence is my contribution
A generation screams for revolution
blood and guns just ain’t the solution
vengeance and violence only brings police sirens
my contribution is breaking the silence

Bridge:
Yeah, I’m breaking the silence
Yeah, I’m breaking the silence
Yeah, I’m breaking the silence
Yeah, we breaking the silence
Are you breaking the silence?
or are you causing the violence?
I start hearing those sirens
and it’s telling me we gotta be breaking the silence

Chorus:
A generation screams for revolution
blood and guns just ain’t the solution
vengeance and violence only brings police sirens
breaking the silence is my contribution
A generation screams for revolution
blood and guns just ain’t the solution
vengeance and violence only brings police sirens
my contribution is breaking the silence

Bonus Track verses

MC FÜBB sensation coming right across your nation
I surpass assimilation, lyrical assassination
of the bullshit conversation seeking annihilation
and death and desecration to my verbal transformation
I developed it through patience, through my wilful dedication
bring emancipation to the soul incarceration
to people of races I will make association,
grow a plantation to the enforce the foundation,
this rapping federation isn’t basing on the hating
or sedation of elation to the vocal elevation
here’s the demonstration, you don’t like it, change the station
this is not a connotation, feel the intonation, what I’m saying:
we don’t need to bring our own destruction,
meeting at the junction to get the brain suction,
lose the mind function so the game can’t operate,
turn hip hop to a mockery? this I can’t tolerate

It’s no upside-down kingdom or a castle in the sky,
I’m laying the foundations for the future here’s why:
without a foundation, your house will collapse
likewise, with no foundation, most these rappers are spitting crap!
been through hell and I’m not going back
I’ma stay on my track
mind sober, can’t afford to relapse
so if I hear ‘em spit wacks, I’ma melt ‘em like wax
turn the heat up on these iced-out rappers, their bound to crack

writing like a titan, like a sniper I be sighting
the words that I’m reciting gonna tell you why I’m fighting
for the greater wrong to righten, yo the cause is so inviting
clench my verbal fist, make the dark world brighten
I penetrate to infiltrate, through the cracks I percolate
rhyming start to circulate, never to impersonate
hating isn’t worth the hate, they violate to compensate
violence come to bring the fate, silence to emancipate
the symptoms of another state that dealers wanna instigate
I descend through the valley-great so rappers can retaliate
eliminate the bitter taste dictating the race
to sit and wait until the date that we will pass through golden gates
unto a place you never heard, make your life swerve
talking shit like you the man, but you do not deserve
to even be called a rapper, you just get on people’s nerves
might not like the taste, but your dinner is served

couldn’t wait for fate cuz I surpassed passed that mind-state
had to create, like De La Soul set a grind-date
sometimes when I rap, I sound irate
but that’s only because I think that society tries to dictate
the way we livin’, way we’re raising our children
the way we’re driven, all of this just to prevent us from building
a new foundation, here’s a new revelation,
conversation some don’t want us to have,
yo I start getting mad
it’s like that mic., they don’t want me to grab
sharp with the vocab, hours spent in the lab
just so I could get my message across,
so many lost, thinking that ice to floss is the endgame?
ha! a platinum chain around your neck is still a chain
even free physically, we’re locked down inside our brains
it’s a crying shame, man I’m sick of the crying game
gone through the growing pains, passed through the glowing flame
despite it all, yo, I overcame
now you’ve gotta know the name

I don’t have time to listen to the criticism
my mission requires precision, I got a vision
I can grip it in my hand, it’s unmistakable ‘cause
I’ve seen images of what we are capable of
the potential force pounds like my heart ventricle
possibilities wrap my brain like a tentacle
try not to be cynical, believe in the miraculous
but negative states of mind are constantly attacking us
smacking us, telling us that we’re insufficient
but the myth of self-worth has got us trapped in a prison
so that’s why I’ve risen up, to get ya’ll to listen up
hittin’ up your ears with the message that’s it’s enough
of sitting and waiting for the world to get better
while we’re hating on each other instead of building together
acting like we’ll be living forever
but we only live forever through our deeds
we satisfy our needs, then we drink and smoke weed
succumbing to greed, yes indeed
it’s a sad state of affairs
but no-one seems to care, content to just stare
out our skulls, we’re drifting like ships with no hull
in shark infested water, like lambs to the slaughter
sometimes I wonder about our sons and daughters
all these little kids, boys and girls
it’s for THEM that we gotta make a difference in the world
